Frederick Hammersleyis a renowned abstract artist who was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1919. His education included the Jepson Art School and the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, as well as the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1959, he received widespread critical acclaim when his work was included in the landmark exhibition Four Abstract Classicists, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art which subsequently toured internationally. Over the years, Hammersley’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, as well as in SITE Santa Fe’s 2001 Biennial, curated by Dave Hickey. He is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1968, he moved to Albuquerque to accept a teaching position and has lived there ever since.
